A one way approach doesn’t help children learn to think flexibly and develop number sense. An important key to developing number sense is asking children to explain their thinking – at all times! Constantly probing:

 

 “WHY DO YOU THINK THAT?”
 “EXPLAIN WHY YOU THINK THAT”
“TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW YOU REASONED”

 

 By repeatedly asking these questions, your child will anticipate or expect to answer them and it becomes part of their natural and mathematical thinking.

But questions aren't the only way of creating rich dialogue...
